Six weeks didn’t sound unreasonable. I even bought her a softer pillow to make her stay more comfortable.
Twice a week, Diane watched our four-year-old son, Noah, while I worked.
One afternoon, I came home to find them building an entire zoo out of our living-room cushions. Diane was on the floor, pretending to be a walrus.
“The walrus needs a lawyer!” Noah declared.
“The walrus already has one,” Diane replied. “She’s a pelican.”
Noah burst into laughter and collapsed against her.
I quietly set my work bag down, watching them from the doorway. During the drive home, I’d been worrying that Noah might have missed me or spent the afternoon feeling lonely.
Instead, he was having so much fun that he hadn’t even noticed me walk in.
