I drove for three hours to pick up my 19-year-old daughter after her summer job… But when she walked out of the building holding a newborn baby in her arms, I froze. I asked her, “Whose baby is this?” She held the little girl even tighter and whispered, “Mom… please, just listen to me first.”

Megan laughed.

“Mom, you’re going to get tired of hearing from me.”

And throughout the entire months of June and July, she really did call me almost every evening.

She told me about her job, her roommates, the guests, and the new friends she was making.

But during the last two weeks of August, something changed.

Her calls became shorter.

Sometimes she said she was exhausted.

Sometimes, she didn’t call me at all.

One time, while we were on the phone, I heard what sounded like a baby crying in the background.

“What was that?” I asked.
