It started with what should have been an ordinary afternoon at the neighborhood playground, but a childhood prank turned into a tragedy that changed my life forever.
I was swinging higher and higher, feeling the wind rush past me and imagining that I could fly. Nearby, a boy from our neighborhood watched me with a mischievous grin.
“I bet you can’t swing any higher than that!” he shouted.
“Just watch me!” I replied confidently.
Then, without warning, someone pushed me from behind.
My hands slipped from the swing’s chains, and I fell backward. My head struck a jagged rock near the edge of the playground with a sickening crack.
Everything went black.
I have no memory of the ambulance ride or the frantic journey to the hospital. My next clear memory is waking in a hospital bed, listening to my mother crying while doctors discussed my condition.
