My husband called an hour before our grandson’s birthday party and said an « emergency at work » meant he wouldn’t be coming.
At least, that’s what he told me.
Dean had been talking about Noah’s birthday for weeks. He’d even picked out the gift himself, a wooden train set he’d spent an embarrassing amount of time researching.
So when he called to cancel, I couldn’t believe it.
« Today? Dean, you’ve been talking about Noah’s birthday for weeks. »
« I know. I can’t get out of it. »
So I went alone.
